The Utdrendans have spoken, and everything has changed as a consequence. People normally avoid the fog surrounding the cursed Kingdom of Mar, but now they are asking sixteen-year-old Kaia Stone to venture into it. The Utdrendans implied that there is something special about Kaia. They claimed that she could help free the land; she need only carry out their instructions and deliver a message to the Marian king.

Mar, however, is a land in which dark secrets abound, and many will stop at nothing to ensure that it remains forever cursed. Determined to work against Kaia, unfriendly forces have already begun to gather.

Will Kaia choose to abandon the only life she’s ever known—perhaps indefinitely—in pursuit of the greater good…in pursuit of her purpose?

Capering on Glass Bridges The Hawk of Stone Duology Book 1 edition by Jessica Hernandez Literature Fiction eBooks

Today, I am reviewing the YA Fantasy story Capering on Glass Bridges by Jessica Hernandez. Telling the story of Kaia Stone, a young woman who has grown up differently than the others she knows, the book describes how the Utdrendans send her and others into the cursed kingdom of Mar, with knowledge from years ago that may undo their horrific doom.

I give this book a 4/5. Here is my breakdown.

Characters: 5/5. I enjoyed these characters very much. Hernandez did a fantastic job in creating an interesting interplay between the various members of Kaia’s party. Their back-and-forths were fun and credible, and their griefs and sorrows equally so.
Plot/Storyline: 4/5. A very solid fantasy adventure story. I think that Hernandez did a good job making her fantasy world interesting (a coming-of-age ceremony in which people are bonded to a homunculus-type being, for instance, and the magical power of Speaking). The effort is apparent, and she does it justice.
Flow/Construction: 4/5. I have no complaints here. The story moved quickly and easily. I can’t recall feeling like the scenes were dragging or slowed down. Again, a solid performance here.

Spelling/Grammar: 4.5/5. Very insignificant, minor mistakes occasionally found. Nothing problematic or unusual.

Overall: 4/5. Jessica Hernandez shows her talent in this book. I’m not sure if it’s her first book (but I think it is), and if so then she can only improve from here. I really hope there’s more to come!

Great story!
This is a remarkable book. I began reading it, and like most books, begins by introducing the landscape, characters, and time period. But when the "action" and story kick in, that's when it truly engulfed me.

The story in itself is remarkable. It follows the several characters, albeit obviously focusing on the main character, Kaia, through a journey that takes unexpected twists and turns. I thoroughly enjoyed the fantasy in this book because it captures your imagination. Although at the beginning it was a bit difficult to follow because of all the events and characters being introduced, it quickly becomes coherent, easy to follow, and is the type of the book where the end makes everything 'click'. Speaking of which, my favorite part of the book is the unexpected ending. It leaves you asking questions and wanting more to the story, you want to find out more about the backstories, the world, and the characters! It leaves you craving more.

What made me immerse myself into the book is the vivid descriptions that illuminate everything yet leave certain aspects to the imagination. The author does an excellent job at painting a picture of just about everything. From the scenery, to the characters, the emotions; almost every sensory perception is touched. The ability to portray everything with stunning detail is the gift of the author.

I truly look forward to reading more from the author and would highly recommend this book to anyone.
Since I have never dabbled much in the fantasy genre as a writer, I have tremendous respect for those who take on the task of creating worlds outside the realm of reality. With Capering on Glass Bridges, Jessica Hernandez has done a fantastic job of setting the scene, painting a picture, and pulling the reader into the world of her creation. I particularly liked the invention of "flird," a combination creature of flower meets bird. Genius.

As an author, Hernandez's greatest triumph is her use of description. Every scene is presented with vivid detail, to the extent that you can visualize nearly every object in the room. For a medium that is defined by words on a page, Capering on Glass Bridges succeeds as a novel at unlocking the mind and filling it with fresh imagery. Ultimately, for a debut novel, I thought Capering on Glass Bridges was very well-written and well-edited.

Highly recommend for fans of YA, fantasy, action/adventure fiction.
